When growing cannabis plants, the question often arises as to whether fabric pots or classic plastic pots are the better choice. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, which need to be weighed up.
Advantages of fabric pots
- Fabric pots are permeable to air, which enables optimum oxygen supply to the roots. In plastic pots, the roots eventually bump against the impermeable wall and grow in circles, which is avoided.
- The air permeability makes it almost impossible to overwater cannabis plants in fabric pots. Excess water can simply evaporate.
- Fabric pots have a cooling effect on the roots because, unlike plastic pots, they do not heat up. The root system remains cool at high temperatures.
- Fabric pots are suitable for soil, coco and hydro systems with drip irrigation.
Advantages of plastic pots
- Plastic pots are cheaper to buy and easier to handle.
- If the soil in plastic pots is of poor quality or incorrectly prepared, waterlogging is more likely to occur if you are not careful.
- Plastic pots are available in many sizes and shapes, including rectangular, to make optimum use of the space in the grow box.
Recommendations for cultivation
- Smaller pots of 0.5 to 5 liters are recommended for germination and cultivation in order to reduce the risk of rot or mould.
- The end pots should have a volume of 7 to 18 liters, depending on the height of the grow box. The roots can spread better in larger pots.
- Automatics should always be germinated and grown directly in the final pot, as the growth stop after repotting cannot be compensated for.
- Sensitive varieties should only be repotted once, otherwise they will need longer to recover from the lack of nutrients.

Ultimately, it is a question of personal taste and experience whether you prefer fabric or plastic pots. It is important that the pots have holes in the bottom to prevent waterlogging and to allow oxygen into the soil.
How do fabric pots influence the root growth of plants
Fabric pots offer several advantages over classic plastic pots for the root growth of plants:
- Durch die luftdurchlässige textile Außenwand der Gewebetöpfe werden die Wurzeln optimal mit Sauerstoff versorgt. In plastic pots, the roots eventually bump against the impermeable wall and grow in circles, which is avoided in fabric pots.
- The water-permeable base of the pots prevents waterlogging, which promotes root growth. Excess water can simply evaporate.
- Fabric pots have a cooling effect on the roots because, unlike plastic pots, they do not heat up. The root system remains cool at high temperatures.
- Overall, this leads to a denser and healthier root network in fabric pots compared to plastic pots
